Recall: 342,000 Toyota Tacoma pickups for loose seatbelts

Toyota is recalling 342,000 Tacoma pickups for seatbelt pre-tensioners that can become loose, the company said today.

On Access Cab trims from the 2004-2011 model years, screws attaching the pre-tensioners to the driver and front passenger seatbelt mechanisms mounted on the rear doors can loosen over time if those doors "are repeatedly and forcefully" closed, Toyota said. The pre-tensioners, which cinch the seatbelt tight when the vehicle senses an impact, could then detach and affect the mechanism's performance.

Dealers will provide replacement parts at a later date. Owners can visit Toyota's recall website or call 1-800-331-4331 for more information.

In March, Toyota recalled 209,000 FJ Cruiser SUVs for seatbelts that could detach from the vehicle. Seatbelt mechanisms for the front passengers could break off the mounts if the rear door panel, which houses the lower belt anchor, cracks.

In November 2012, Toyota recalled 150,000 Tacoma pickups from 2001-2004 for rusting frames. In 2008, Toyota was forced to extend corrosion warranties and even repurchase Tacoma pickups from the 1995-2000 and 2001-2004 model years -- a span covering roughly 800,000 vehicles -- because entire frames were rotting out.
