Kia Announces Soul EV Coming Next Year, Will Debut Soon

2014 Kia Soul

We fearlessly predict the Soul EV will look a lot like this gas model but with a charging port.

Kia has announced that it will soon be taking the electric plunge, entering the plug-in fray with a battery-powered Soul EV. It revealed few details about its rolling junction box, saying only that the car would be based on the 2014 Soul and be offered for sale in select markets. If California isn’t one of those markets, we’ll collectively eat our own feet—the state’s electric-car mandate for automakers is the primary driver behind EV proliferation. It certainly isn’t because such cars are profitable.

  • Instrumented Test: 2014 Kia Forte Sedan 2.0L Automatic
  • Instrumented Test: 2014 Kia Cadenza

Specifics for the car’s powertrain and range are forthcoming, but Kia promises the Soul EV will be aerodynamically optimized and visually differentiated from its gas-powered counterparts. (Think wheels, fascias, interior gauges, and perhaps special colors.) The automaker also says to look for the new model at a major U.S. auto show soon—call us crazy, but the Los Angeles auto show seems like a good bet. It’s not like it’s held in California or anything.
