May 30: The first Indianapolis 500 ran on this date in 1911

One hundred and two years ago, a racer named Ray Harroun climbed into the Marmon Wasp and gave the world one of its most useful inventions en route to winning the first Indianapolis 500 (or as it was known then, "The International 500-Mile Sweepstakes Race." Instead of riding with a mechanic who could bark directions as other drivers did, Harroun installed a little mirror in front of the steering wheel to see what was happening behind him -- the first use of a rear-view mirror in a car. Half a century later, Harroun appeared as the mystery guest on the TV quiz show "I've Got A Secret," with the man who had just won his first Indy 500, A.J. Foyt:
