On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Despite several clever guesses, no one correctly identified the shifter as belonging to a 1971 Ford Pinto. We’d say that’s quite the kick in the butt, but that’s something of a sensitive topic when it comes to the Pinto.
The Pinto pictured here is from Ford’s original press materials sourced from our archives. Famous for its fuel tank’s propensity to ignite in rear-end collisions, the Pinto was one of Detroit’s earlier small-car efforts. While its spec sheet wasn’t exactly inspiring, the Pinto proved a decent enough platform, because we built one into an IMSA race car in the mid-1970s.
