July 22: The Fisher brothers found Fisher Body on this date in 1908

"Body by Fisher" doesn't mean anything to modern car owners, and it's been almost 30 years since General Motors last stamped those words into metal. But for much of automotive history, the Fisher family's coachbuilding business was the keystone of Detroit, building hundreds of thousands of vehicle bodies for every major automaker before being bought by GM in 1919. And for decades after, GM traded on Fisher's name, in stylish advertising and the Fisher Body Craftsman Guild contest for young designers. Here's one of those promotional efforts from 1970, touting just how much Fisher did for GM:
