BMW Reveals 2-series Specs Months Ahead of Schedule

Three months before the new BMW 2-series was scheduled to launch at the Detroit auto show, BMW of South Africa let slip the pint-size coupe’s technical details. Bimmerpost managed to grab screenshots of the spec sheets posted to BMWoSA’s configurator. Those images reveal that the compact coupe will be offered in South Africa with turbocharged four-bangers in the 220i and the diesel-ingesting 220d, as well as a turbocharged straight-six in the M235i.

Here in the U.S., we won’t get the “20”-badged entry-level models, at least not from the outset. The U.S.-market 2-series will launch with the 228i, featuring the same N20 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder as seen in BMW’s other “28”-badged offerings, rated for 240 horsepower. Americans also will be treated to the M235i, which will use the N55 turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six, which the specs say will be good for 322 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. The leaked materials indicate that the six-cylinder–powered 2-series will be able to sprint to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds and achieve an electronically limited 155 mph. Our last test of a 135is resulted in a 0–60 sprint of 4.6 seconds, so we believe BMW is being a touch conservative with its estimates.

  • Comparo: 2012 Audi TT RS vs. 2011 BMW 1-series M Coupe, 2011 Infiniti IPL G Coupe
  • First Drive: 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG
  • Instrumented Test: 2013 BMW 320i

Both the 220 models (gasoline and diesel) could potentially arrive stateside in a few years, but a full-blown M2 is nearly a certainty after M GmbH CEO Dr. Friedrich Nietzsche confirmed there would be a spiritual successor to the 1-series M. Such a model likely would be powered by a version of the next-gen M3/M4’s S55 turbo inline-six.
