2014 Jeep Cherokee EPA Ratings Announced; Gets 31-mpg Highway

EPA fuel-economy numbers were released today for the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee and they’re pretty good: 31 mpg on the highway for a front-wheel-drive Cherokee equipped with the standard 184-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder “Tigershark” engine. That’s a whopping 9-mpg improvement from the V-6–equipped Liberty that it replaces, and earns it the best EPA highway fuel-economy rating of any Jeep product to date.

Overall, the numbers are appealing; with the aforementioned 2.4-liter engine, the estimates are 22 city/31 highway for the front-wheel-drive model and 21/28 for four-wheel drive. Step up to the 271-hp 3.2-liter V-6 and the results come in at 19/28 for front-wheel drive and 19/27 for the all-wheel driver.

The numbers stack up well against the competitive set. The front-wheel 2.4-liter comes within a hair of the 1.6-liter Ford Escape’s 23/32 and the Honda CR-V’s 23/31; it beats the Hyundai Tucson 2.0’s 23/29 by 2 mpg on the highway. Switch to all-wheel drive and the Cherokee hangs in there, right on the heels of the 1.6-liter Escape’s and the CR-V’s—which are both rated at 22/30—and well ahead of the Tucson 2.0’s 21/25.

Many of the faithful are grumbling about the crossover underpinnings of the new Cherokee, but with fuel-economy numbers such these, the new Jeep Cherokee is likely to catch the attention of economy-minded shoppers in the crossover market.
