On Tuesday, we posted an audio recording of a mystery car’s exhaust note. To hear it again, listen to the recording embedded below. We were impressed that almost everyone who commented figured out that this week’s sound came from a diesel six-cylinder—even if it wasn’t exactly the correct diesel six. It in fact was the 2014 BMW 535d‘s 3.0-liter inline-six, and to our ears, it’s not easy to discern the engine’s compression-ignition-ness. The silky six’s only giveaways are its low redline, turbo whistle, and faint idle-speed clattering sound; otherwise, its 255 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque are hard to argue against.
