Management Shuffle at Mercedes-Benz AMG: There’s a New Sheriff at the Skunkworks

Positions are shifting within Mercedes-Benz AMG. Ola Källenius is being promoted from his role as the CEO of AMG effective October 1st, and his replacement will be Tobias Moers. Moers, a 47-year-old native of Freiburg, Germany, joined AMG 19 years ago—long before the former tuner became part of what then was known as Daimler-Benz. In 1999, Moers assumed responsibility for AMG’s large vehicles, and three years later, he took over the entirety of AMG’s vehicle-development program. The CEO-in-waiting has served on the board of Mercedes-Benz AMG since 2011.

Källenius leaves his post as the head of Mercedes’ performance arm, which he’s held since 2010, to take over for Joachim Schmidt, a Daimler veteran. Källenius will be charged with overseeing sales and marketing for Mercedes-Benz cars on a global scale.

  • Instrumented Test: 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupe and Roadster
  • First Drive: 2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG
  • Comparison Test: 2013 BMW M6 Convertible vs. 2013 Jaguar XKR-S Convertible, 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG, and 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet

Throughout the next few years, Moers—a true car guy with a keen interest in automotive technology, history, design and racing—has his work cut out for him. AMG soon will launch an SLS-based 911-fighter referred to internally as C190, as well as a customer-racing program centered around the CLA45 AMG—not to mention the usual hotting up of Benz’s traditional offerings and the AMG-engineered performance and styling packages. We have no doubt Moers will serve as a great leader for Mercedes-Benz AMG, a unit that operates in a far more autonomous fashion than BMW’s M GmbH or Audi’s Quattro GmbH—a true skunkworks operation.
