700-hp Camaro transforms a cartoon snail in 'Turbo'

Here’s the premise: A plant worker (who just so happens to be a snail named Theo working at an actual tomato plant) wants nothing more than to go fast. But while he spends his nights dreaming of speed, Mother Nature has different ideas. That is, until he’s sucked into the intake of a street racing Chevrolet Camaro.

As Steve Tihanyi, general director of branded entertainment for General Motors puts it, “Turbo actually gets sucked into the engine of the car, and through that process as he goes through the pistons and the cylinders and the crankshafts, and all that . . . good stuff inside an engine, he ends up being what we call ‘turboized’ in the process.”

So, rather than being vaporized into nothing, he emerges not just fast for a snail, but fast for a full-size car. So Turbo and his buddies set out to win the Indy 500. That brings up another significant tie-in for Chevrolet: Tony Kanaan just won that race this year using a Chevrolet V6. OK, a lot of drivers used that engine, but you get the point -- Chevy, Chevy, everywhere.

“I think the film does a great job of supporting a lot of what Chevrolet is doing in IndyCar racing. Since a lot of it takes place at the Indianapolis 500, and we were an actual fit to that based on our racing heritage,” said Tihanyi.

Though the film is animated by DreamWorks, Chevrolet unveiled a full-size version of the black Camaro that gave Turbo his speed at the Chicago Auto Show this year. Said to produce more than 700 horsepower, there’s nothing about the concept that isn’t over the top. The wheels are 24 inches tall, and the dual exhaust pipes are – wait for it – 5 inches in diameter. Ridiculous isn’t the word.
