2014 Mazda 6 Diesel Delayed for More Testing, Should be Worth the Wait

2014 Mazda 6 Placement

Mazda’s redesigned-for-2014 6 sedan is everything a proper Mazda should be—good-looking and sweet-driving—but what most excites us about the four-door is that it will be offered with a diesel engine. Eventually. Originally slated to closely follow the introduction of the gas-fed Mazda 6, the diesel version has been delayed by six months. The news was first broken by The Detroit Bureau, and Mazda has confirmed to us that the report is indeed accurate.

  • Comparison Test: 2014 Mazda 6 Grand Touring vs. 2013 Honda Accord EX-L
  • Instrumented Test: 2014 Mazda 6 i Sport
  • Instrumented Test: 2014 Mazda CX-5 2.5 AWD

Mazda released the same statement to us that it sent to The Detroit Bureau:

“The on-sale date for Mazda6 Skyactiv-D clean-diesel has been moved to late-Spring 2014, to accommodate final emissions testing and certification. We are pleased with the ongoing development and are excited to launch this much-anticipated vehicle in North America.”

New-model delays are nothing new, and it’s hardly shocking that Mazda is taking some extra time to get the 6 diesel correct and have it certified—after all, the brand hasn’t sold a diesel passenger car in the U.S. before. As for the delay, well, we’d say it’s worth it. We’ve driven the 6 diesel and can assure you that it’s quite good, and should prove plenty thrifty when it comes to drinking fuel. While we expect the 6 diesel’s 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine to make it into the CX-5 crossover, Mazda hasn’t confirmed if or when this will happen.
