After the news seeped out last week, Chevrolet revealed the official power figures for the 2014 Corvette Stingray today: 460 hp, and 465 lb.-ft. of torque, which the company called the highest ever for the base-model Vette — although buyers will need an extra $1,195 to get that target.
Chevy has been doing a dance of seven veils with some of the Corvette's key figures since its reveal in January; we still don't know fuel economy or a specific 0-60 mph time beyond "less than four seconds." The power revealed today was in line with estimates, but the top numbers only apply to models with the optional sports exhaust; with the stock pipes in place, the new Vette makes 455 hp and 460 lb.-ft. from its 6.2-liter V-8.
The numbers caused some consternation among the Vette-leaning bench racers; in the world of muscle and performance cars, 400 hp has started to seem low, what with the top-end Camaro and Mustang both producing more than 500 hp. Yet because of its light weight and chassis, the Vette should be one of the fastest cars in the world — and for its $52,000 price, one of the better performance bargains even if its power figures don't match some of the heavyweights. We should know more in a couple of months when Chevy lets journalists behind the wheel for the first time.
