On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. Several of you commented that the shifter perhaps belonged to a Mustang or even a Mitsubishi—but no one figured out the shifter’s actual origin. It in fact came from the 205 Turbo 16, a wild mid-engine hatchback Peugeot created in the 1980s.
The Turbo 16 pictured here is from our March 1985 issue. The car was never officially sold in the U.S., and was a homologation special to cover Peugeot’s Group B rallying efforts. Based on the front-engine and front-drive 205 hatchback, the Turbo 16 featured a mid-mounted, 200-hp turbocharged four and all-wheel-drive with three limited-slip differentials, plus mostly fiberglass bodywork. The racy hardware helped us achieve a 0-to-60 time of just 6.4 seconds—quick for the time—and allowed for plenty of tail-out fun.
