Honda Gets NSXy, Debuts NSX Concept-GT Race Car Bound for Super GT Series

Like a baby butterfly slowly struggling out of its chrysalis, Acura’s resurrected NSX sports car is taking a while to gestate for customer use. (It’s due to hit showrooms later next year as a 2015 model.) In the meantime, the automaker has kept enthusiasts’ rapt attention with a stream of NSX concept cars—and most recently, a demonstration lap at Mid-Ohio raceway in a functioning prototype. Now, Acura parent company Honda has unveiled the NSX Concept-GT, an NSX-based race car previewing the brand’s entry for the 2014 Super GT series in Japan.

  • Instrumented Test: 2014 Acura RLX FWD
  • First Drive: 2014 Acura MDX
  • Instrumented Test: 2013 Acura ILX 2.4 Manual

NSX fans know that the first-generation model was campaigned in Super GT, so a return to the series is a natural move for Acura/Honda. As were the original NSX race cars, the Concept-GT is festooned with extreme-looking aerodynamic aids, including bigger-than-enormous rear wing and a splitter that looks to feature the enlarged internals of a Slap Chop. The racer further deviates from the road car by way of its powertrain. The production NSX will get a V-6/electric Sport Hybrid Super-Handling All-Wheel-Drive setup, but, per this season’s Super GT regulations, the Concept-GT swaps the V-6 for a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder mill.

Okay, Honda (and Acura), consider our anticipation for the NSX piqued. Can we please drive it now?
