We’ve become accustomed to seeing some pretty strange customized cars coming out of the 24 Hours of LeMons race series. Everything from a 1987 Chrysler Conquest with a giant squirting ketchup bottle sticking out of the roof to an AM General DJ-5 “Mail Jeep” hits the track – if not crosses the finish line – in this racing series for vehicles that cost $500 or less.
But an almost-famous LeMons racer with the handle “Speedycop” literally flipped the script for his latest creation: an upside-down Camaro fitted to a Ford Festiva chassis that debuted last weekend at the LeMons’ Real Hoopties of New Jersey event.
Speedycop, aka Jeff Bloch, is a 17-year veteran of the Washington, D.C., police department and an amateur mechanic. He’s also a self-professed "8-year-old kid trapped in a 40-year-old body, with just enough talent to pull off my wacky ideas."
Even though Bloch brought up the rear in the upside-down Camaro's maiden LeMons voyage, the car was definitely a crowd favorite. It earned Speedycop and his Gang of Outlaws crew the top prize: the Index of Effluency (IOE) trophy, given to a car that, as Bloch puts it, “has no business being on the racetrack but is really cool and does its best anyway."

This isn’t the first time Bloch has prepared an unusual rig for LeMons. He and his crew created the 27-foot Spirit of LeMons, a 1956 Cessna 310 airplane body over a Toyota minivan chassis, to compete in a LeMons race in South Carolina. It, too, won an IOE trophy and, for Bloch, a few more minutes of fame and a lifetime of respect from his fellow LeMons racers.
