Recalls: Chevrolet Cruze for brake assist loss, BMW X5 for faulty diesel fuel heater

General Motors is recalling 292,879 Cruze sedans for power brake assists that can fail, according to wire reports.

GM said it received 27 reports of low-speed crashes caused by the problem, which affects only 2011-2012 models equipped with both the 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

No further information was available.

BMW is expanding a recall of diesel-powered X5 SUVs with fuel filter heaters that can switch on permanently, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

On 2009 and 2010 X5 xDrive35d models, the fuel filter heaters, which heat the diesel fuel in cold temperatures, may have faulty electrical connections that can overload a transistor and drain the battery. At worst, a fire could result. A total of 3,660 models are affected in the United States. The original recall, issued in Aug. 2011, covered 2,120 models from 2009. BMW said it received at least 22 reports of faulty filters between late 2012 and mid-2013 on the later models, but no injuries or accidents were reported.

Dealers will replace the fuel filter heater this month. Owners can call BMW at 1-800-525-7417 for more information.

In February, BMW recalled 30,265 X5 models from 2007-2010 to fix brake vacuum lines that could cause the power assist to fail. In December, BMW recalled 29,800 diesel-powered X5 models from 2009-2012 for a loose bolt that could result in a loss of power steering.
