Car Tech Spotlight: Big backup-camera display in the 2013 Dodge Dart

Backup cameras have become more common in cars, and fortunately, they've gotten cheaper. This is in part because more cars have in-dash screens than ever before. Even vehicles that don’t have in-dash screens can have a small backup camera display in the rearview mirror, for example. The government also wants to require them for every new car.

But even as backup cameras become more widespread, the view they display often varies. This was apparent in a 2013 Dodge Dart Rallye I recently tested that has the Uconnect infotainment system with an 8.4-inch screen.

The large touch screen in the relatively small car gave a big view of what was behind me, especially compared with other backup cameras in more expensive and larger vehicles – even with a similarly sized screen.

For example, the following week I tested a 2013 Range Rover Evoque with an in-dash 8-inch screen. Here’s how the view behind the Evoque appeared as rendered by the screen:

And here’s a video of the same view behind the Dodge Dart Rallye with its 8.4-inch screen, which I shot around the same time of day in similar, rainy weather:

The view provided by a backup camera is something I never really pay much attention to, unless there’s a feature such as multiangle views, as in the Honda Odyssey. But the view through the Dart's display was so remarkable that I noticed it immediately.

So if you’re buying a new vehicle and visibility is paramount, consider how well the backup camera shows what’s behind the car.
