Shifter No. 142

On Monday, we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle whence it came. We admit this week’s contest probably wasn’t the most difficult we’ve run, but repeat winner Icculus was first both to post a response and the to pick out the shifter as belonging to a 2000 Honda S2000.

The S2000 pictured here is from our August 1999 issue. This first-generation model, known by Honda fans as the “AP1,” featured a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder screamer of an engine. Output was an impressive 240 horsepower, and the motor redlined at 8900 rpm. (2004 and later models didn’t rev as high, thanks to a slight increase in displacement intended to generate more low-end torque.) But let’s not overlook the Honda’s handling: It scored 0.90 g on our skidpad and stopped from 70 mph in just 159 feet.
