It doesn't seem long ago most convertibles came with the usual cloth-roof; after all they're lighter than the hardtop convertible and take up less luggage space. The benefit of combining both the hardtop and cloth-top variants into one package, however, remains undeniable, and over the years this philosophy has become common. America's Ford Motor Company offered the 1957 Fairlane 500 Skyliner - pictured above courtesy of DVS1mn - as one of the first retractable hardtops in the world. The car didn't sell particularly well, and trunk space was severely compromised, but it stands as one of the instigators that started the retractable hardtop revolution. Be sure to watch Ford's commercial on the Skyliner below, and if you have a shot to share, add it to the Motoramic group on Flickr, or send us a message via Twitter, Facebookand Google+.
