James Rees of Collegetown, Penn., bought a Chevrolet Bel Air coupe in June 1951, for $2,163, just as he was preparing to join the Army. He's still driving it today, and according to the Guinness Book of World Records, that gives Rees the title of longest ownership of a car bought new at nearly 62 years. Rees told the
Abdington Patch the car has been repainted once in its original colors; otherwise it's stock, from the 92-hp straight six to the spare in the trunk. At a few ticks under 98,000 miles, Rees, 83, takes the Bel Air out at least once a week — a testament in these disposable times to the value of tending what's still useful.
