As the checkered flag flew on LeMons day one at New Jersey Motorsports Park, Team Speedycop’s upside-down Camaro sat idle in the pits with a vaporized clutch, while 3 Pedal Mafia’s (ironically two-pedaled) Rolls Royce crossed the line to the cheers of the crowd. Sadly, the final lap wasn’t indicative of the Roller’s earlier hours, which were largely spent marooned in the pits with brake problems. The Camaro, meanwhile, clicked off 113 laps before the clutch let go, leaving the inverted Chevy with a healthy cushion heading into the final day.
The A-class field is being led by the Mercedes-Benz 190E of Ziegel Scheißhaus Racing, which also leads the overall standings by three laps over Rally Baby’s BMW 318i. It’s basically a really bad DTM revival in Class A.
Down a notch in Class B, the mostly-new crew of judges might have made a slight misstep—the multi-race-winning Honda of Bill Danger and the Road Hazards was deemed a B-class car, and it quickly jumped into the class lead. That counts as a bad break for the second-place Ford Escort of the Massholes, which is having perhaps its strongest race yet.
Class C is shaping up as another classic, with the battered Escort of The B Team leading the way. Since this car ended last year’s NJMP race (unintentionally) on its roof, its performance so far this time has been a big improvement.
In the second slot in C, Morrow’s Racing’s GM 3800 V6-swapped AMC Gremlin (everyone’s got one of those, don’t they?) has soldiered steadily along, hardly mussing its fur.
Another entry from the 3 Pedal Mafia stable—the fishing-boat-bodied Chevy S10—is hanging on to third place in Class C, despite a hard-charging effort from the Rally Baby turbocharged/carbureted/terrible AMC Hornet .
